Natural Fancy Yellow and Canary Diamonds

Natural fancy yellow diamonds - sometimes referred to as canary diamonds - are completely natural and caused by the presence of nitrogen.

The seven natural color grades for the natural fancy yellow diamonds are, in ascending order, faint, very light, light, fancy, fancy intense, fancy vivid and fancy deep. Fancy vivid and fancy deep are the most desired hues. Collectors seek fancy intense yellow diamonds.

Green and orange are the secondary hues found in natural fancy yellow diamonds.

Natural yellow diamonds are referred to as canary yellow diamonds when their color is strong and they possess unique physical characteristics. In such cases, the yellow diamond can be referred to as a canary yellow diamond.

Though the yellow diamond was once considered an impure white diamond, today there is greater understanding of and demand for canary diamonds

Unlike with other fancy colored diamonds, pure dark tones do not exist with yellow or canary diamonds. Though canary diamonds are relatively dark, pure dark tones with yellow diamonds become either brownish or greenish.

Natural fancy canary yellow diamonds come in all cuts, including princess, emerald, asscher, oval marquise, pear, radiant, heart and cushion, though round natural fancy yellow diamonds are the most common. Princess canary diamonds are quite rare.
