Diamonds in the movies

Did you know that IMdb, the online movie data base, lists over 200 titles with the words DIAMOND or DIAMONDS appearing in them - That's without even counting the movies which plot or subplot is based on diamond-related themes.

Whether we're talking about a blood-freezing action movie, a touching love story, a biting documentary or a long-lasting TV series, diamonds have acted in the leading roles or as co-stars in any film genre, made for the big or the smaller screens.

Need we mention Blood Diamond, the Leonardo Di Caprio feature that kept a leading spot between the headlines last year, and not only in the entertainment section (read more about Blood Diamond in our past article) And who can forget Diamonds Are Forever, the 1971 Sean Connery-as-James Bond classic, which brought the Bond, James Bond, all the way to Last Vegas following a diamond smuggling investigation?

But even when they do not get a clear credit in the title, diamonds' star position remains intact. You surely remember Snatch, the 2000 Guy Ritchie comedy/crime thriller which portrayed a scary group of gangsters, followed by a group of Orthodox Jews, followed by another group of Pikeys/Gypsies (and that's not even the half of it) - all trying to put their hands on a huge 80-something karat diamond.

We can go back almost 100 years, and still find movies about diamonds. But what about the future? Will the diamond attraction ever go away?

The answer is definitely NO.

A sneak look into future productions, still in pre-productions stages, brings to our attention The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, a feature scheduled to be shot at spring 2007. The film, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Evans, David Strathairn and Ellen Burstyn, which is based on a Tennessee Williams screenplay and directed by Jodie Markell, is a romantic drama brought to its foremost conflict by a precious diamond being lost.

The appeal of diamonds, be it fancy diamonds, colored diamonds or any type of diamonds - is everlasting. There will always be stories to tell about them, and a large audience who eagerly tunes in or rushes to the nearest theater to watch a good tale about the love and passion or hate and jealousy generated by a precious diamond.
