In what some insiders would call inspired marketing, the Israel-based merchant notes that the brilliant-pink stone weighs in at 1.68 carats — a big number for a colored diamond that also happens to be a lucky number that promises wealth in Chinese numerology.

Business Insider- The Leibish Prosperity Pink - January 19th, 2012

Shmulik Polnauer sat examining a 1.71 pink diamond at the 2011 Pink Argyle Tender. He spent nearly two hours with it, then phoned his father, Leibish Polnauer, the CEO of Leibish & Co. Fancy Diamonds.

Shmulik placed a bid at the tender and won six pink diamonds from the Argyle mine in Australia, which he brought back to the Israel-based company.

The company turned the 1.71 pink diamond into a 1.68 carat Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink. By upgrading the color, he also significantly upgraded the price.

Given the rarity of pink diamonds, anyone who makes a successful bid in the Argyle Pink Diamond Tender is pretty lucky, but Leibish & Co considers itself especially lucky to have purchased six of them at last year’s tender.

One of the six was a 1.71-carat diamond that Shmulik Polnauer, Leibish & Co.’s chief buyer, decided to re-cut. The result was a 1.68 carat fancy vivid purplish pink, radiant-shaped stone.

The re-polishing improved the stone in two ways. First, it significantly upgraded its color intensity, which upgrades its price.

The second improvement has to do with its new weight: 168 is an especially auspicious number in Mandarin.

“Demand for natural coloured stones remains strong, and we only expect the market to expand further because oflow-supply availability.”

The past year had “definitely been a year of recovery and substantial increase in revenues” for top fancy suppliers.
