Investment in Natural Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds began gaining popularity in 1985.  They were discovered in the Argyle mine in Australia, which is now the most famous and largest pink diamond producing mine in the world – and since then, pink diamonds have been in great demand. They are extremely rare and therefore highly valuable. Their prices, as with the prices of all diamonds, are determined by cut, color and clarity.

The price of a high quality pink diamond can reach more than $100,000 per carat. The grading of a pink diamond is according to a one to eight scale, where one represents the most intense pink and eight represents the lightest color. As with all diamonds, it is important to choose a pink diamond in accordance with its color saturation.

The 4Cs: carat, clarity, color and cut, are important as well.

Clarity describes the issue of inclusions, most of which are not visible to the naked eye unless magnified. Sometimes, fractures or inclusions are caused during the formation of the stone.

Carat is the weight of the diamond and is measured by experts with professional tools.

Color means the intensity of color in a diamond (or the lack of it), and is graded in white diamonds alphabetically from D to Z.  A grade lower than Z enters the diamond into the fancy color category, where the color grades are as follows: Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep and Fancy Vivid Pink.

Cut is the way the diamond has been transformed from its rough state, into its polished one.

Pink colored diamonds are in high demand today and are the most sought after color in the fancy color range. Their market has been steadily growing, and has seen a price appreciation of almost 100 percent over the past 15 months.

The fact that singer/actress Jennifer Lopez wore a 6.1carat pink diamond engagement ring in 2003 added to their appeal.  On average, the value of pink diamonds tends to increase by 10-15 percent a year, due to the fact that the Argyle mines are nearly depleted .

It is predicted that the Argyle mines will have depleted their supply of pink diamonds by 2018, and pink diamonds will become a rare commodity.
This, of course, will only add to their value, and is something to be seriously considered when contemplating an investment.
