PRESIDENT'S CORNER - Virtual Brand

Leibish Polnauer

When we launched the Fancydiamonds.net website in 1998 we had our doubters.

Hard to imagine a world where Google was still in diapers and Marc Zuckerberg barely out of them (well, to be fair he just finished high school in 1998). Who in their right minds would dare buy a fancy colored diamond online? However, crazy or visionary, somebody has to forge a path.

Around the turn of the millennium, the concept of branding was reborn; customer sentiment and hunger for branded product evolved as did the shopping experience - online retailers began to grab market share from bricks and mortar stores. Consumers started to believe that the future was here and that the future was quicker, easier, reliable, and cheaper.

2010 is the year of digital branding in the virtual reality. For 20 years Leibish &Co. sold loose diamonds only to the trade. We supplied the finest European brands with fancy diamonds. Leibish & Co. used to be a diamond company; today we are a virtual brand.

This virtual branding was naturally something that the second generation of the family brought to the business. Yossi took it upon himself to ensure that the look and feel of our website was in keeping with our impeccable reputation. And Itzik, our e-Commerce Manager initiated system management to lift our company to multinational standards.

Of course, we did not forget our traditional role in the trade as Shmulik our GIA GG Graduate Gemologist raised the quality and grading of our fancy color stones to the highest level and Leibish's daughter, Chavi Itzhakov added the flair of world class design to our image.

The sprinkling of the second generation with our other loyal employees - who we consider to be a second family, has generated an exceptional work ethic and camaraderie at Leibish & Co..

auction Results continue to sparkle.

Picture the scene: November 16, a packed Sotheby's Geneva auction room, and an air of anticipation.

All it took was four bidders, a world renowned diamond connoisseur, an exceptionally rare stone, and almost USD46.1 million (including buyer's premium and commission) to set pulses racing and records breaking. The price equated to $1.86 million per carat.

The graff pink auction

The 24.78 carat, VVS2 intense pink, emerald cut diamond, purchased by the inimitable Laurence Graff,  is the latest precious stone, to claim the mantle of, "World Record Auction Price for a Precious Jewel". The diamond, promptly renamed "The Graff Pink," is further evidence of the insatiable demand for quality diamonds.

The Geneva sale set a record total for Sotheby's at USD105 million,  a figure well above presale expectations of USD66.8 - USD96.8 million.

The revenues of USD22,140,350 and 83% clearance rate of the 212 lots for sale, contributed to a Christie's - New York record of USD131 million of jewelry sales for the 2010 year - the highest total ever for the U.S. jewelry auction market.

Undoubtedly, the star of the show was a 6.89 carat rectangular-cut fancy vivid purple-pink diamond. The stone was the top lot, selling for USD6,914,500 or USD1 million per carat.

This follows the recent sale of "The Perfect Pink" at Christie's - Hong Kong sale on 29 November for a record-breaking USD23.1 million.

Anna Kournikova 11ct Pear shape Pink diamond ring

Fifteen - Love, Thirty - Love,

Two point five million -

love, love, love.

The 11-carat pink, pear-cut diamond presented by Enrique Iglesias to fiancé Anna Kournikova for their engagement was created by Argyle and is valued at USD2.5 million.

The ring also features two trillion side stones.

Lucky for Anna's on court opponents that Enrique didn't elect to buy her a green round-cut diamond - that would have been just too confusing.

... and Match
